I would like the first coaches’ corner to be addressed to the coaches and parents.
“You can win, win, win, but if you’re not equipping young men to be great husbands and fathers, you lose.”
– DABO SWINNEY, CLEMSON FOOTBALL.
When we started Shamrocks, it was for many reasons, but the end game was always the same. We wanted our kids to stay busy, learn the game and be around people that would be positive influences on our sons. Many times, I have lost sight of this. It is easy to get caught up in the wins and losses. As a parent/coach I pushed my sons and teams to be the best they could be and many times the scoreboard dictated how I felt as a coach and father.
Travel lacrosse wins and losses should not dictate how a coach, parent or player should feel. I needed to change. Now I judge myself and players on effort more than anything else. Did we give our best effort as coaches, players and parents? If the answer is “Yes” it is a winning moment. If “No” it is a learning moment. I truly believe it takes all of us to make this work. We all need to buy in and continue building a program that not only creates good lacrosse players but also helps support being a good student, teammate, neighbor, friend and citizen.
I feel that with the coaches on staff and parental support we have, we will keep moving in a positive direction. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
